Greater Shreveport Chamber hosts SBBA Summit 2024

The 2024 SBBA Higher Education Summit, presented by Christus Shreveport-Bossier Health System, offered a crucial platform for members of the Northwest Louisiana Legislative Delegation and the public to discuss the current status and future direction of higher education in the region. This year’s summit featured an engaging dialogue with presidents, chancellors, and representatives from the nine colleges and universities serving Northwest Louisiana.

The program commenced with opening remarks from Dr. Kim Hunter Reed, Commissioner of Higher Education, setting the stage for an informative and collaborative session.

Higher Education Panel:

  • Centenary College: Dr. Chris Holoman, President

  • Grambling State University: Mr. Adarian Williams, Deputy Chief of Staff for the President

  • Louisiana Tech University: Cami Geisman, Executive Vice President, External Affairs

  • LSU Health Sciences Center Shreveport: Dr. David Gusick, Chancellor

  • LSU Shreveport: Dr. Robert Smith, Chancellor

  • Northwestern State University: Laurie Morrow, Executive Director for Economic Development

  • Northwest Louisiana Technical Community College: Dr. Jayda Spillers, Chancellor

  • Southern University Shreveport: Dr. Aubra Gantt, Chancellor

Legislative Panel:

  • Representative Dennis Bamburg Jr.

  • Representative Steven Jackson

  • Representative Tammy Phelps

  • Representative Chris Turner

Representative Michael Melerine also attended but was unable to stay for the panel. BPCC Chancellor Dr. Rick Bateman was unable to attend the summit.

University representatives provided detailed overviews of their institutions’ latest innovations, achievements, and partnerships. They also shared their needs and priorities for the upcoming 2025 legislative session. The legislative delegation discussed the successes and challenges faced during the recently completed regular session and engaged in a lively discussion on the pivotal role of higher education in workforce development.

The 2024 SBBA Higher Education Summit highlighted the importance of collaboration between educational institutions and legislators to foster educational excellence and economic growth in Northwest Louisiana.
