Shreveport to require mandatory testing for backflow devices

Residential water customers with a lawn irrigation system will soon receive notices about completing mandatory testing requirements for backflow prevention devices installed in those systems. The testing is required by State plumbing and sanitary code regulations, and the City is sending notifications to advise customers of these State requirements. This will only impact a limited number of water customers.

The mailed notices will provide clear instructions on how residents can comply with this requirement. This includes how to locate a qualified tester who can perform the necessary inspection and testing of the backflow preventer.

The purpose of this testing is to ensure that the backflow preventer—a crucial device designed to protect the public water supply from contamination or pollution due to backflow—is functioning properly.

For more information on backflow preventers, including their role in protecting public health and the reasons behind the testing requirement, residents are encouraged to view our informative video available at: https://www.shreveportlawater.gov/DocumentCenter/View/350/backflow_preventers-1080p

The city appreciates the cooperation of all residents in ensuring the safety of Shreveport’s water supply. For any questions or additional information, contact our office at 318-673-5510 or visit our website: www.shreveportlawater.org/.
